Fly Fishing for Steelhead on the Prince of Wales Island in the heart of the Tongass National Forest.
Prince of Wales Steelhead Fly Fishing
Our Prince of Wales Steelhead package includes five days of angling and six nights of lodging. Accommodations are provided by the Fireweed Lodge in Klawock, Alaska. The lodge, situated at the mouth of the Klawock River, is a family-run operation with comfortable rooms, high speed internet, and meals provided by a lodge chef. Anglers arrive the first day in the afternoon, settle into the lodge, unpack and prepare for the following five days on the water.
Each day, anglers and guides depart the lodge via vehicle and can access multiple locations depending on water levels. Flows are largely dependent on precipitation and snow melt. Like winter steelhead in many Pacific Northwest systems, flows and level can be the largest factor in fishing tactics and productivity. On a given day, both skagit and scandi systems can be used to best cover water and water types. Spring steelhead can be aggressive animals. Like winter steelhead, these fish arrive to the rivers in full maturity and are ready to spawn.
While our focus in the spring is swinging flies, guests do have the option to access and fish a number of smaller, high gradient systems in which they can indicator fish pools and pockets too small for thee traditional swung fly. Daily, anglers and guides can make these decisions as water levels allow Prince of Wales steelhead average 10-12 pounds, with some individuals getting much larger.
